Has any MFKer made their own filter cartidges for a hang-over-the back filter? What materials would you use and where would you get it?

I was thinking of using some house filters.

Pillow batting is cheap and functional, but I'm not sure how you would go about making the frame to fit your filter.

I use the frames from old filters and the canvas netting too with batting, felt or foam.

yup, I do the same. For all the marineland HOB's cartridges, they have one side that is black plastic. I use a razor to cut out the blue filter. Then I just cut out my own piece off of my stash of filter fiber. Put it so the current holds it against the plastic and I'm good to go.

What brand and model filter?

I use pantyhose. some are thin, some are pretty tight knit and work far better than floss pads or bags.

check it out... just reuse the plastic cages from your old filter cartridges.

#3 is a new cartridge, #1 is after you remove the pad/bag.

#2 is refitted with a nylon bag.

These pics I used a pretty thin pair of nylons, but I'm currently using some black ones the girlfriend abandoned, the knit is thick and tight, they filter better.

Actually as the thin ones get used for a while, they start trapping finer particles too.

They wash out with a sprayer alot easier and cleaner than floss bags or pads.

I have one of those kinds of HoBs too, yer right, you razor the old pad off the plastic and then I do the same as above, just bag it in a piece of pantyhose.

I'd take more pics but you get the idea.

you can use the nylon to hold the fiber padding in place if you want to, the fiber padding does trap some finer stuff that gets through the nylon.
