ok i have a 5 gallon screw top cooler that i am trying to convert to a canister filter. i am having trouble finding on O ring or Gasket that is big enough to have the lid screw down and be air tight. i am thinking of using high-density foam rubber weather stripping as my gasket but don't know how this will contaminate the water. what do ya'll think??

A bead of silicone around the top rim of the cooler should be enough. Let it dry and then put the top on. The silicone will compress and should give you a seal.

i thought that too but found that as u tighten the lid it is really hard to judge the compression so what ended up happening is the silicon peeled off the rim in some places and it wouldn't hold pressure and would leak air, slowly but still leaked.
