My extreme over tank filter. Love it other than the evaporation.

My powerhead in-tank filter. It's just an upside-down funnel filled with sponges and lava rock wrapped in a nylon paint-strainer bag. I tied the bag tightly with a plastic-coated twistie-tie and slid it down the neck for extra snugness. Then I crammed a powerhead tightly into the top and *poof*, got mechanical filtration before my bio with easy maintenance. I was removing the whole thing from the tank into a bucket and switching out the nylon bag every week or two, but the past few times I simply unplugged the filter and siphon-vacced the outside where it was clogged and that seems to work well, too. Typically I find myself making improvements to a concept as time rolls on, but this one seems like a winner out of the gate and I have yet to see any way to make it better aside from adding stages inside or using a bigger powerhead.

My betta tray filter as a bump. Small fountain pump takes water from one corner through a sponge to keep fins out, pushes it via a tube across the tank into a small V8 bottle. A hole in the lid allows the tube to enter a triple layer of nylon mesh bags that are anchored by the lid itself. After the water is pushed through the mesh, it is washed through a few handfuls of old gravel I had laying around. It then returns to the tray via many small holes in the bottom of the bottle. Pretty good movement, too. Probably the most you'd want when spawning bettas.

And bonus bubbles. Most pathetic nest I've seen. Must be his first spawn. Or he's a loser.
