hello all!

finally a victory in the DIY category.....

Wetdry! now, i officially have a completely over-the-top over filtered 40gal growing out my jar and 2 oscars as well as a common plec.....

enjoy......

as for the jar.....eating so well! freeze dried, and today, some fresh fish fillets.....he is gonna get big in no time.....

i know the tank is small, but trust me, the water quality should be quite pristine now........

the new wetdry breakdown:

first compartment - mech filt, with some lava rocks and a couple bio-balls

second compartment - a load of lava rocks

you will notice that i made use of a siphon hose to initiate suction...

ghetto style!

What happens when you have a power outtage?

Do you have an anti-syphon hole at he outflow?

thanks for the input guys.....a couple questions.....

1) overflow - as long as i place the siphon hose at a level in the tank where if the pump shuts off, there is no overflow in the sump, all is well right?

2) i can't find a floating switch here in china - so i plan on just using the sump/wetdry when i am home and can monitor any power outages or whatever else might happen - is this ok to do? i know that bio-media will die if left out of water, so i plan on siphoning water into the sump, so that the bio is submerged, and then stopping the siphon and letting it just sit....how does that sound? (for when i am out)

1) Placing the inlet to the syphon hose just under the water will work, or place two 1/4" holes 180 degrees apart in the syphon hose just below the water surface.

2) If you stop the water flow from the tank to th filter for more than two hours the bacteria will (die) not recover and the unit will re-cycle, causing ammonia spikes etc.

If you can't use an overflow

Have you considered a gravity return system?

Place the sump higher than the tank, pump up to it and let the water drain back to the tank by gravity.
