all in all your going to spend the same unless a tank is over priced

read the DIY for wood tanks... build your own wet/dry too.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

I have made my own 150 gallon tank and you were told correctly that by the time you build one for yourself, you will have paid just as much as a fairly priced store. The only things beneficial about building your own custom tank that I am aware of are listed below:
1) The enjoyment of a job well done (if it is well done).
2) Being able to fit a tank into a non-standard area.
3) Having something truely unique over everyone else.
4) Doing everything YOUR WAY (best for perfectionists).

I've been there, done that, and have the pics to prove it. The tank is still running (about 1 1/2 years old) and it's made of plywood and one piece of glass in the front, with an artificial rock wall on the sides and back. Everything is custom, stained like I wanted it, and I have all bragging rights (not as valuable as you may think!). I designed the plumbing, the wet/dry filter, and the lighting and all cabinetry. Guess what? I think I may have spent more than what I could have bought at the store and this doesn't take into consideration all the time it took (about 1 1/2 months, but could be done in 2 weeks full time). I have been in business for myself for about 3 years, so I get contractor prices on wood, so everything was cheaper! I still spent more or roughly the same as you could buy it for!

The good news is that I have exactly what I envisioned, I'm happy, the fish are happy, and it was a non-standard shape/size. I have also maximized the efficiency in many areas, and I LEARNED TONS ABOUT SETTING UP AQUARIUMS! I now do this professionally and get paid and thanked for my services. It's really nice to get handed a check while the person thanks you deeply from their heart as if you are paying them!

It's up to you to decide if it's worth it to build your own.

Well lets look at it 150 gal

$100 for plywood 2x4's and misc material
$100 for 1 sheet of glass for the front
$50 for the Epoxy paint
$25 for bondo/filler
$25 for some type of glue/adhesive
$20 for silicone
$20 for misc. Screws, sand paper, and other supplys

Grand Total $340

This is just rough estimate and im sure my prices are on the low side and im prolly forgetting a few things. Then u add the gas from running back and forth to Hardware store , Glass shop. Ohh and the hours of work , your time has to be worth something...... Last but not least the headache of filling it up and praying it doesn't leak , or just fall apart.

All in all for a 100-150 gallon tank just spend the $450 and have a warranty :cool-1:

Now if u are wanting to make a 300 plus gallon tank this is were u will save money on building ur own.

yeah i did reacher on custom tanks paying for delivers and gas transportion come up to the same price. adding up to also all the materials you paid for. I just comes out to the same as the store. That is why i just say the heck with it. and made me a tank that can house all my monter fishs like My Red Tail Catfish.
I have a 1300gallon indoor pond made for less than $400dollars it also includeds a 2,200gallon water fiter/pump.

I think your best bet is to get a job.. you're only 14, but you should be able to get working papers from your school. I started dishwashing when I was 14 to appease my paintball habit. At least your 'rents arent buying it all for you! kids are so spoiled these days, whether you build your tank yourself or earn the money to buy one you will have much more pride in it, than if it was given to you.

I agree with all these other guys, get a job and just fork out the money for the fish store tanks for two reasons. One: you get the warranty with the tank and can always take it back if anything happens. And two: you learn the value of the dollar!! I am a youngin as yourself since I am 18 but I got my first job when I was 14 like you moving/assembling furniture in a store since I am a bigger guy. Since then I changed over to bussing tables and just the satisfaction of knowing you paid for something with your money and not relying on your parents will teach you many lessons in life! I paid for all of my aquatic things, paintball, automotive, and computer things myself with no help from my parents and it has deffinately put me ahead of the game in life. So get a job, save up money, and go buy the store bought tank and accessories.
