I want nice lighting for my tank. 8' long. I was thinking LED . Ive looked at a few brands like marineland and aqualife. Are those priced fair or could I DIY led lights blue/white w moon.

What about 4' light strips from lowes with certain bulbs?

Does it have to sit on top of the tank, or can the lighting be hung from the ceiling?

Leds will save you money in the long run energy wise, although buying a t5 setup from a home improvement store will be a lot cheaper.

Truth be told either one of them would work and both can be hidden in a DIY canopy. It really just depends on what you want.

If you have a little electrical know how and some cash to spare, anything is possible. I would personaly suggest an led setup. Be warned though, that it is a bit expensive. My 4 main led bulbs were more expensive than all 6 of my cans and custom trim rings combined for my lighting fixture.

Something like a 2 led setup that is built using lamp kits it something of the like will probably cost about the same as a 4 bulb t5 fixture.

My suggestion is to run by homedepot/lowes and take a look around in their lighting aisle. You'd be surprised on what you'll come up with. And since the canopy isn't yet built, after you find what you want you can always build it to suit the fixture.

Sorry for the long winded ramble...

Keep us posted with updates in the lighting build.

Also, just looked over the thread again and noticed you wanted a moon light setup.

This could be done with both leds and t5's.

With leds you'll most likely be stuck ordering the blue bulbs online, like I'm doing now.

With t5's you could just buy a separate fixture to house a black light bulb.

Thanks for the input. I will go to lowes today to look around. I also like the lights that are on the ebay link.. Leaning towards the t5 with moon lights.

I'm a fan of the eBay setup tonto.

What type of bulbs are those? Are they readily available, locally, or do you have to order them?

I am super envious of that tank and stand! Should look pretty good with a nice set of lights on it.
