im planning a diy plywood/glass aquarium...i have just came across a piece of glass (actually part of a table) that measures ~57.5"X27.5" and about .5" thick....in everyones expert opinion, what size aquarium do you think i could safely plan with that?

(the bigger the better, (in inches please))..
thanks to all..

"~57.5"X27.5" and about .5" thick...."

About .5"??? Better double check that...

Size Kinda depends on the ratio of the viewing widow to the front panel...and the distance betwwen your door jams...

I'd try a 72"*48"*30 meself.

thanks, unfortunately my glass is gone.:(
time to re-peel my eyes in search for another..
in the mean time, is double pained glass thats stuck together (from a sliding glass door, or something of that nature) more or less ideal for an aquarium?...in other words, is it stronger for the situation?..

no
the double pane adds no strength. it is double paned so it adds thermal insulation. some have used laminated glass but when you do this you size it so one pane is strong enough to do the job ands the second is insurance. most common is to use either a single pane glass or cell cast Acrylic. when you get really big you will want to go to Acrylic or starfire glass so you don't have to see the green in the standard glass. Acylic scratches alot easier but may never be an issue depending on your home and also the fish in it. good luck with your build
