Has anyone ever built a gravel vac out of a submersible pump? My goal is to be able to vacuum the gravel without having to do a water change everytime. Plus, the python ripoff (Lee's) I have doesn't produce much suction at all. I am not an engineer by any degree, but to me this idea of mine seems feasible. I want to attach the siphon to the intak of the pump, with a fine mesh, or sponge material blocking the intake of the pump itself. Then route the exit of the pump back through tubing into the tank, effectively recirculating the water minus the large waste. I've attached a crude .bmp of my idea. Any suggestions? Will it work, doomed to fail...fool for trying?

Use a powerhead with a hard tube attached to the inlet and a filter sock on the outlet.

Your idea will work but your going to scatter more trash setting it up than vacuuming.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. Can you elaborate.

reverse your drawing. I use a $10 pump from harbor freight. attach 6 foot 1/2 inch hose to intake. steal a booty nylon from wifes dresser and rubber band it to outlet. drop whole thing in tank and plug in. start gravel vac-ing. dont use on sand cuz it will tear up your pump.

Ok, I get it now. The main reason I cam up with that design is I have the pump, it was a freebie when I bought the used 100G this weekend.
