Hey y’all,
I’ve been reading some threads on diy heating but I had an idea I haven’t read on that I’d like a second opinion on. I was thinking a heating element from an older electric smoker. Now the element has no control but I can easily power it through a smart plug control by a water temp sensor. The element is rated for 250 Fahrenheit so I think it’s capable of a large pond. Perhaps it’s not the most energy efficient but I have a lot of solar so I don’t care too much. I was going to enclose the element in a glass box and surrounded by lava rock. I also wanted to incorporate a pump to introduce a good amount of flow. I live in the high desert of California, so for the next couple months I won’t need heating but the winter does get cold. This would be for a 1000 gal pond or more. Any input would be great.

Well I have not done it, but reading posts from folks who have like Duanes makes heating an outdoor pond sound impractical and inefficient, even for some obsessives. I like experiments though, just remember electrical safety with that element. More experienced folks should be by shortly.
