now that i got your attention, i was wondering if i could use a normal siphon tube instead of that normal overflow tube?

and a second question, could i use a styrofoam box to act as the sump? would there be any harmful effects from that?

your help is greatly appreciated!!

o I think so, why not. did you try already, did it work? as long as the end fittings fit snugly & the u-bend doesn't crink so much to slow the flow.

o I say no, it may deteriorate over time due to the moisture & other water ingredients, styrofoam is a soft petroleum by-product, wouldn't chance it. better with a rubbermaid type container.

your help is greatly appreciated!!

let us know how you make out.

What kind of overflow are you using? That would determine what kind of tube you can use.

I wouldn't do it. Rubbermaid totes are cheap. Get one of those.

Yes you could use gravel but you can expect to get a much reduced rate of biological filtration in comparison to using a bio media, which has a massively increased surface area for them friendly bacteria.

I agree, there are other cheap alternative to biological filtration that would work much better than gravel. Try pot scrubbers.
