Like the link says. Curious if anyone makes their own food for their cA cichlids? I've looked and I find a ton of recipes for Africans but ca and sa are few and far between.
My fish are convicts, JD's, hrp, and firemouth's.

So far I have in my freezer i have shrimp, talapia, salmon, cod, spinich and peas. I'm looking to see what else to get such as spirulina, kelp...carrots, broccoli, vitamin's to add? If anyone has links to recipes and/or what amounts of each food is used I'd much appreciate it. Thanks in advance

Why do you want to make your own food? From what I have read alot of terrestrial plants aren't good for fish.

I like to do a lot of diy kind of stuff. I was looking at the ingredients that omega1, nf, nls use and wrote a shopping list with some of the stuff they use for food. I figured having it fresh bought, no preservatives or adding any ingredients that would not be beneficial to the fish. I've read ppl saying that their homemade food has increased growth, color, ECT. I more curious if ppl made their own, what they added and what the fish liked or not. My fish aren't drab but I'm always looking to see if there is something I can do better

When I was into saltwater there were a ton of recipes for DIY food floating around. I haven't seen many for freshwater but they all start with a good base ingredient like fresh fish filet then add other ingredients like you listed.
Try a few different recipes and see how your fish reacts to them.
If you find something that works well or doesn't work at all , report back.
I'm interested in trying it ,I'm sure that they are others as well that would give it a go.

I tried a recipe last night. Not so much a specific one just a little conglomeration of different ones I saw. Mine consists of half a cod fillet, about 10 good size shrimp, half cup of peas, 2 prices of broccoli, 3 spinich wraps, teaspoon of paprika and teaspoon of crushed red pepper,1 egg yolk, half of a whole garlic,...from omega1 veggie micro pellets, omega1 veggie rounds and cichlid flakes. I did all porportions in a trial size so in case it was no good I didn't spend all night on it. This took me a half HR at the most to get the ingredients, blend them, heat them and add the gelitan. Then just put in a pan and refrigerate and the next morning I cut a few cubes out. Feed the fish and easy to eat, no mess and best of all it was like catnip to them.

Beef heart, shrimp, spinach, earthworms, carrots, pellet food, water, garlic, gelatin.
Blend together
Pour into ice cube trays
Freeze
I used this for Flowerhorns back in the day.....

The goldfish people make their own food. google 'goldfish gel food recipe' It results in healthier, faster growing goldfish. I don't see why the same should not apply to cichlids.

I feed usually 2x a day. A little in the am and a little at night. For one of the feeding have I change it up from pellets, flakes, or such and the other I have been giving them the homemade sparingly. I will say they go after it. Haven't noticed any I'll effects. Which I wasn't expecting to but non the less all good. Hopefully in time there will be visible effects of the homemade food as in growth and color.

Hmm. I will have to try this with some of the old crap in the fridge. I accidentally bought too much and I'd hate to throw it out. I have some freezer burned broccoli and zucchinis I threw in there too. Haha. I'm sure the guppies and tinfoil will be happy.
