DIY Hood and Lighting Help

I am setting up a new 100G saltwater tank and am going to build my own canopy. I plan to build a hood and get 4 36" standard light fixtures from Home Depot. I want to keep clams and corals so I was wondering if I just bought the bulbs like VHO or T5 and stuff could I do that or do I have to buy those crazy expensive fixtures like Metal Hallide and stuff? I really want to keep clams.
