I have to build a hood for my tank and was wondering if this would be good enough. I will prolly drill some holes for vetilation so the moisture doesn't ruin my lights, not planing on growin plants so it doesn't need too great of lighting. I was wondering if this will be alright for the fish i am going to have in it knowing that they can jump (aros, and oscars and such) the lights are only going to be about 6 inches from the surface of the water so if i put like eggcrate diffusers will that stop them from gettin broken in the case that a fish jumps???

Heres my idea ( i can't really build it to much taller because then i would have no room to open the hood, the tank on the stand is about 6 feet tall)

I'm starting to build a new hood too, but I'm still looking for wellbuild examples. Hope you have some pics up soon.

I will be building it sometime this week if ppl think it will be aro friendly, i just don't want my aro to jump and smash the light injuring itself, which is why i want to know if eggcrate diffuser would be good to put over the lights or if there is sumthing better that won't injure the aro. I don't want to use the diffuser that comes with the light because it is pretty jagged.

Eggcrate maybe a too rough (hurt the fish).

Why not a Plexiglas shield?

They make plastic (?) safety tubes that fit over the bulbs with rubber boots on the ends too.

i guess i could put plexi over the lights, but i can't afford a piece of plexi for the whole top of the tank. where would one get these tubes??? any ideas on what i should do???

They sell the tubes a HD, Lowes, Ace, etc...

Sorry, forgot to say that, but schaadrak picked up the slack.

awsome thank alot guys i will also see if i can get it a little bit higher to reduce the risk

well i can fit a couple more inches so the hood will be 8 inches tall now, i have started cutting the wood now too, unfortunatly my circular saw just packed it in so i am forced to use a handsaw (a slow process) but its coming along i will post some pics when it is all done, it will be a few days, i gotta let the wood dry out a little bit more, it has been outside in the rain for a few weeks until a week ago when i put it inside to dry.

o i also changed the design a bit the lights will be closer together so that i can cut the opening in have making it easier to open, i will prolly cut it 3 feet and 4 feet that way i could add a 5th light if i wanted
