I have a 56 gallon tank holding 4 4" perch. The tank i have is located on my second floor. the problem i have is that the tank is room temperature which is about 64F right now. im wondering how you have kept tank cold (besides the ice method) and any great ideas on it. i'd like to drop the temperature about 10F

The only effective way to cool a tank with some sort of practical sense is a chiller. I've seen DIY ideas using a small refrigerator, but they are inefficient and unable to produce results.

That is a substantial amount...

I don't see any option but to invest in a chiller.

I don't even know if chillers go that low... and you'd have to keep the water constantly moving to prevent ice from forming (which could crack your tank). Why do you want the water that cold?

sorry about the confusion i meant drop it down 10F to about 50-55F. The native fish here are used to cold weather and very cold lake temperature, the water doesnt get any warmer then 50F

he just wants to drop the 10 degrees not to 10 degrees.

a chiller is the only sensible way to go.

can't you aclimate them to warmer water? a 10 raise in temps over a few weeks even shouldn't cause them to die... Fish are very hardy in general. As long as care is taken enough to ensure that the change is not to quick...

You could use the ice method and slowly allow the temps to reach room temp by adding less and less water.... No?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question... The most that you may have to do is add airation to the water.... being that the warmer the water less oxygen there is... just a though.....

being from canada myself, i don't see why you couldn't have them in slightly higher temped water, after acclimating them. the waters in the country do go higher than 55F during the summer. Would cause you less hassle as well.

Agreed... This was my only point... I wasn't trying to come off "Smarta$$" like.... Why go through the extra hassle of keeping the water cooler.

Plus there are mose possibilities of diseases in cooler water. At least in aquariums...
