Anyone here implementing the DIY King "upgraded" HOB overflow? Considering doing this on a large scale with two 2" over flows at 2500 GPH. Looking for feedback on any issues anyone has encountered with design.

It staying primed is the issue. The overflows and the bucket filters used as shown in his videos dont work long term as described. Do you ever see him using those? I've built them and they work for a bit but not reliably. I am very mechanically inclined so thats not the issue. I can also follow direction. After most "power outage" scenarios is the point when they fail. Get or drill the tank I dont trust the purchased hang on overflows either. Not long term anyway.

I ran two of the King of DIY "upgraded" overflows for a little over a year with no issues. I used 1.5" plumbing and did the version where you cut off the "U" inside the tank and stick the down tube inside a larger piece of PVC. I moved is the only reason the system came down. System stayed good through a few power outages and I also shut down my pumps to feed so they where turned off three times a day for 10 minutes. DIY leaves a ton of room for user error. If you do decide to construct them make sure you scuff them really well if you plan to paint them. Mine where 50/50 when I took it down.

Personally have a overflow box which I purchased over 20 yrs ago on my 180 gallon
and never had a issue with it. Had to replace the hose a couple of times.

I had a hob on my 34g cube it worked great for 2 years, then 1 day it didn't and luckily my sump was only 10g and it was early summer so heater was off. It only failed the 1 time. No fish or coral were lost. Its working now on my buddies 75g has been for years. Drilling is a better choice in my oppinion, but failure is always an option on any device and in most circumstances.

I tried it and did not have a good experience. Luckily, it was only a ten gallon sump, but it still made quite a mess.

When it came time to set up my 220, HOB overflows weren’t even considered. I drilled five holes in that beast and it is now capable of flowing 3600 gph. I only run it at about 1600 though. But I have no worries about losing the siphon in the overflow.

I highly recommend you go ahead and drill the tank if it’s not tempered glass. It’s not as bad as you think.
