So I hear this is the place to ask this question?

I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money but I was thinking about going to Lowes/Home Depot to grab some of the LED rope lights. The canopy I have already has lighting mounts... I just need to build something where the LED lights can be placed on so that can be mounted onto the canopy mounts.

Any tips or ideas would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Well the DIY forum is probably your best bet for finding other threads with similar goals, and for asking questions. I'd give input, but don't really have experience in DIY LED lighting.

I will add that you need to think about what the lights are for. If they are simply for you to be able to see into the tank (the usual reason, the fish don't need light) then do whatever works, if you are looking at a planted tank or saltwater then it's a whole different story. You have to make sure you have the correct wavelengths, light penetration, etc. Not too difficult to figure out, but I doubt LED rope lights would work for those applications.
