diy live rock?

Hmm let it cure for at least a few weeks, although I think letting it sit in a garbage can full of water and changeing the water a few times would be alot easier... I see the stuff in canals

Yea a month should def. cure it. How much are you trying to use?

not sure i just broke up some 50 year old concreete and i figured i could get some free live rock out of it. i would pick out the peices that look the best for base and shelves and then toss them into the bay.

Heres the big deal, which I think you can overcome. Lime in the concrete, if not cured 100% your gonna destroy PH and consequently fish. Waiting for it to cure will save alot of $$ in the long run instead of just buying it, good luck!

I am a new aquarium enthusiast and i'm wondering about live rock too. can you do this with any kind of rock besides limestone? also what do you mean by cure? as in just wait long enough for the bacteria to stay on the new rock? or is there something else that happens?

as a new aquarium enthusiast i would buy your first live rock only because of all the cool hitch hikers you get. not sure about what rock you can use i guess any rock that is porous and allows the bacteria to hide inside. I know people make live rock out of concreet becuase they can shape it what ever way they want. seeing i have a pile of waste conreete figured i would give it a shot. if it works mabey i would try to make my own by pouring it to what ever shape i wanted

Concrete's not expensive, why not a) look up the best concrete mix for aquarium use (portland type 1 or 2, or a little plaster of Paris in the mix etc) and b) make your own. To use carbonated water (?) you might get a more porous structure, and using straws etc... can make this even better.
