For a 180gallon tank is it a better idea just to buy a filter like an aqueon proflex sump, or maybe just make a wet/dry trickle filter myself. Can someone recommend a filter that has worked for them, I am new to sumps and I wouldn't mind going overkill with the filtration.
Doesn't really matter. You could even make one out of a 40 gallon breeder tank. It's more of a bling factor, you can make a perfectly functional sump out of a rubbermaid container, it just won't be as pretty.
my 220 has a 40 gallon rubber maid sump with two 5 gallon pails filled with bioballs and sponge, charcoal and prefilter, returned by a little giant md4. who cares what it looks like as long as it works,.

I like it! A biobsll chamber and a pump chamber. Pretty much exactly what you would get from a commercial version costing many times more. Yhe biggest mistake I see people making with DIY sumps is unneeded complexity with unneeded chambers.
if i could i would make my own sump to make it silent and to add filtersocks , if i made 1 it would look like the proflex sump with just a hell of alot underwater bio
how much flow does that eheim return, i always run an external pump on the bigger set ups, eliminating the need for more powerheads in the display, nice though
if you are experienced and have the tools required, go DIY.
Nothing beats saving money & having a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
Those commercial sumps are, IMO, for those who knows nothing about silicone or acrylic cement (including me)
Not always, I happen to be a filtration junkie and I'm sure I'm not the only one already. Most of the time when I visit a friend's house to view his tank, I would check the filtration system first before actually viewing the fishes.
We even have a thread dedicated for MFK users to share what is under their stands.
