around the corner from the LFS
In the next 6 months or so I plan on getting a 240-300+ gallon tank. The question here is should I build it or buy it I have a friend that is going to build me a custom stand for the cost of materials and he currently builds high end pool tables so I can only imagine how nice its going to look and typically thats a very expensive part of getting a aquarium set up.

There is a big difference in building a decorative yet sturdy stand... and making a water proof box...

Building your own tank can be done but will require a ton of research and confidence in your choice of materials as well as your craftsmenship. Keep in mind there is a good chance this will be the first time you or your friend has used these sealing materials.

I'm bey no means trying to talk you out of building your own tank, but trying to convince you to think it through thoroughly before making a decision. Get input from your friend as to how confident he is or how eager he is to build the water proof box.

Buying or building, it sounds like a fun project. I hope we see pictures when it comes together

its not hard to build it yourself. but i have a feeling the outside wont look as nice as your friends. just make sure he knows a gallon of water weighs a lil over 8 pounds. so a 300 gallon tank will be over 2400 pounds + weight of tank.

How about you DIY a tank that has already been built? I might be able to get you a line on a 300G in Chicago. Need a bit of work, but you could get it cheap.

Yeah this makes for good advice, if the stand is 'A' class... a dodgie homemade tank will look odd. i recommend practicing on a smaller cheaper tank to learn of some of the pitfalls.

Well in real measurements:)

A liter weighs a kilo and a 900ltr tanks weighs...
