Can anyone explain how one works and how to make one. I keep staring at one at my lfs, and none of the employees know how it works so I can't really understand how to build one because of that! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a litle bit more info would help us to better understand your question but i will try to help.

there are two different types of overflows for use with a sump. the first type is a hang on type and this is designed for use in a tank that has not been drilled or cant be drilled because the tank is tempered glass. this style consists of a box or tube inside the tank and a box or tube on the outside of the tank that is conected by a syphon tube.

the seccond type is for drilled or "reef ready" tanks. this type of overflow consists of a box inside the tank that has a hole in the side or bottom of the tank that a bulkhead fitting goes thorugh.

here are a couple pics to help you see how it works.

the first is a hang on overflow. when you pump water into the tank from the sump the water level rises and spills over the internal box wall this water then displaces water in the outside box becasue the syphon tube conects them. the water then spills over the baffel in the outside box then drains down the drain line into the sump.

this is an internal overflow as the water is pumped from the sump to the tank the waterlevel rises ans spills over the internal oveflow box and then drines down to the sump. most people will use some form of a stand pipe so that the water from the display tank does not fall all the way to the bottom of the box to help reduce noise

Hahaha thanks!

And thanks to the rest that makes more sense. My tank isn't drilled and I'm definitely not risking trying to do that, so I would have to go with the first one mentioned.

Check out my links I put, they have really easy to build ones. Look into those if you aren't drilling the tank.
