I need some feedback on a DIY overflow I made as far as size goes for my tank.

I have a 150 gallon tank and a pump that does about 1600 GPH at the head height I'm going with it. (1800 at 0 feet). I made a 2" Overflow which can handle 2350 GPH (Not sure if that is true for the DIY overflow, as opposed to a drilled tank with a 2" standpipe). So the 2" is plenty to accomandate any flow retriction in the pipe that would build up overtime.

My question is... Should I have gone with 2 1.5" overflows or is the 2" overflow fine... or is it overkill? At 1600 GPH thats about a 12x turnover rate. Is 12x Turnover too much? (the 12x Turnover rate includes the sump as my tank isn't actually filled to the top since I keep turtles .. is MonsterTurtleKeepers? :screwy: I do have about 12 Fish in there as well).

Thanks

I would say that the 2" overflow will be fine. Worst case scenario is that you might have to throttle back the pump using a ball valve.

The turnover for the tank shouldn't be a problem. But watch out for too much current. That is alot of output that could cause your fish to tire out, stress, or even die. Make sure the force of the output is diluted/divided.

As far as throttling back the pump.. why would I need to do that? Shouldn't the overflow only flow as much as the pump? or are you saying I should do that to reduce noise? On the note of noise Should a duroso standpipe with a DIY overflow work as effective as it would if it was just a standpipe and not an overflow?

Overflows are ok.

I don't think you can have enough turnover rate with turtles!

What's your sump like?

Well I'm been trying to find a decent one for months. I was using cheap Sterilite containers but the damn things kept getting small cracks at the bottom. They were 30 gallon containers.. Currently I have a 27 Gallon that is only filled half way just below the bottom drawer of the sterilite media bins (2 Big Drawer Setup with 1 Small drawer at the top for mechanical. Took me forever to melt the holes into the bins to accomandate the flow of 2" water. Plus I guess you're right about the turtle thing, I can't think of anything else that poops so much. :D

I'm still on the look out for something thats LONG and about 17" wide to fit in the frame of the tank stand. Not sure what the rule of thumb is for Tank size:Sump Size.

Plecos do!
I like to have a sump that is at minimum 1/5 of my tank size, preferrably 1/4. Use another tank, like a 55 or a 40.
