I'm setting up a 72x24 tank (180?) that I plan to only fill a little over 3/4 of the actual tank with water, I want to leave some room for driftwood and emergent plants, just for personal preference and to further discourage jumpers. So, my question is, is there a way to make an overflow (or 2) that would cope with the lowered water level? Any ideas? Thanks!

it was said that the overflow wouldnt be that strong, due to it being so low.

Make an overflow like the one in the sticky thread. Just shorten the intake pipe to where you want the water level. Leave everything else exactly the same. The 90 degree fitting on the intake pipe can be omitted.

i would drill the bottom of the tank and add a pipe to the 3/4 level.you can add a pipe connector and add another 1/4 of the pipe if you want the water back up to that level.i would def. choose drilling the bottom

Drilling isn't really an option at this point, but I agree that would be the easiest option. I was thinking if I lowered the outside end of the overflow like ThePBM said, it should work fine....It'll take a little bit of adjustment and careful testing, but hopefully it will work.

i'm using the same overflow as the sticky(only i've got two intakes incase one gets clogged) on my 180g w/ only 8" of water in the tank(going to be mostly for semi-aquatic frogs) and i'm getting around 400gph, so it is perfectly possible but a ***** to prime though.

Thanks Danyal, I figured priming would be a pain, does yours have the check valve on top for priming? I figured that would make it easier. Any chance I could see a pic of yours? And just to satisfy my own curiosity, what type of semi aquatic frogs are you keeping? Some sort of Ranid? Goliaths maybe? I dunno but they must be big to require a sump and a 180g tank.
