So i built a DIY overflow for my 135 gallon tank i just got and it will be running into a 33 gallon sump (for now until i get the 55). I just have a couple questions.

1. It is made out of 2 inch pvc (it was the easiest to get here) what would the flow be on that any ideas??? It is similar to the one here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/fo...ad.php?t=15733
except the intake part was tee'd off into 2 intakes.

2. Where that one ends and the before the sump i want to add a ball valve but the only one i can find is a 1.5 inch metal one (stainless i think) so how much would that reduce flow??, and would it be harmful at all????

Anyway thanks in advance for the help look forward to gettin some answers so i can get my tank done

no one has any ideas???

i dont know if im reading what you tried to write correctly or not...

you dont need a shutoff/ballvalve on your overflow.. its only going to drain water that goes over your set water level (hence the name "overflow")

do some searching for a flow calculator

2" can flow 800gph but with the valve it drops down to 600gph.

Are you asking if the SS valve will be chemically harmful (no) or harmful to the flow? (lower flow rate, see above)

what pump (gph) are you going to use?

Dr Joe

well maybe i will scrap the ball valve and get a pump from my lfs it pumps 762 at 4 feet which should be perfect if i don't have the valve

the only reason i wanted it was in case i ever wanted to stop the flow for any reason

I used the valve on mine to reduce the flushing noise.
