diy plant holder help

i think they are lettuce plants,floating plants.
well last time i had them in my pond the roots would fall off and clog my pumps.
i need some ideas for a floating pot or something to stop this.
i was thinking screen and styrofoam but i dont want this to ugly.

I made floating squares from PVC pipe, some with screen and some with knee high nylons as a cup or bag to let the plant float in (I would have said pantyhose but I don't want your DGF finding the package in your trash and starting a problem ). Both worked with water lettuce and water hyacinths (fish were eating roots).

Styrofoam blocks for corners with dowels separating them would work also. Kinda like the drug growers use in the swamps. Just leave out the rattle snakes.
