DIY pond filter inserts

Hey, just a question for all of you who have DIY pond filters out there. What inserts do you use in them? Also, do people use activated carbon at all in ponds to get nice clear water? Thanks

I used carbon for the first month my pond was running, after that mostly bio media and filter floss.

Carbon really only needs to be used after meds. or in spring when the water may sometimes be stained from tannins in leaves. Other than that running it all the time won't hurt, but could get pricy for the whole season.
