Need ideas on a diy skimmer or two I was thinking of using two 5 gallon water jugs set inside my 50 gallon sump just don't know how to set it up water goes in bottom, lots of bubbles and then water goes out top? How does one keep bubbles from going out top? I'm assuming using a flow restricter to have the water line above the outlet ? Thanks all

Here is one I built from plans on koiphen.com.
I first built it for a pond, but move it inside in the winter.
It also acts as a biological filter. click to start video.

I believe that most people see protein skimming as very abstract, or even voodoo, and most fresh water aquarists believe it only works in salt water.
I have been using protein skimmers on fresh water since the 80s, and when I worked in a lab did experiments on water quality pre and post skimming.
I believe it to be the most effective way of filtration available, because it directly removes everything from debris and pollutants, to free floating algae, and even parasitic macro and microscopic organisms.
The first time I ran across its use was in an article by Joe Gargas, who was using it in a discus hatchery, and have never looked back.
It sometimes takes a while to figure out how it best works for your situation, but once you do, the results can be very satisfying. Flow and air/water interface agitation are the main components to achieving success.
below left waste removed by fractionation, right, tank water.
