diy protein skimmer

ok so i decided not to buy but to build my own protein skimmer this is my diagram its supposed to be an airstone skimmer, im debating wether or not ill need the powerhead.if i go with the powerhead i will position it in such a way that it will make a cyclone effect to prolong the ammount of time the bubbles will be suspended in the water but the question is down facing cyclone or up facing ? are there any problems with my design? what else should i know/ consider ive never built a protein skimmer before i need to know EVERYTHING, thanks for the help in advance .

the powerhead should push water through the bottom not the top. is this for a sump or hang on back? the water line shoud be where ever your retun is which isn't that far up in the skimmer where you have it pic'ed up there.

I believe you want the powerhead angled at the bottom from about 1/4 the way up the bubble shaft. But not for a cyclone, ask on reefcentral.
