So I am in the process of adding some substrate fertilizer for an amazon sword and I wanted to get some opinions on planting it.

I got some osmocote granules and was planning on getting some gel caps to bury them like most people but I've been unable to find them locally / or cheap online.

Can I safely wrap the osmocote in a small roll of paper towel and plant it like that? I figured it should be ok as paper towels are biodegradable and I only need it to keep the fertilizer in place.

I tried the ice cube method but it melts too fast.

After finding out the price of root tabs at my LFS, and nearly fainting in the shop, i researched making my own and got some osmocote and gel capsules. I'm surprised you couldn't get the gel capsules though, I got a pack of 100 very easily for a couple of quid, I think that was on amazon.

But if you're really struggling to get some then I suppose what you're proposing would work. The thin tissue would quickly break down exposing the osmocote to slowly release its nutrient. I can't see the tissue being a problem, after all you'll only be using a tiny piece.

I'm pretty new to the plants thing though, someone more experienced may chip in with a better way.

Those where my thoughts exactly, root tabs are way expensive lately.

I was able to get the osmocote for a fraction of the cost, and honestly it's an insane amount too so I should be good for years to come. Lol

The issue I found with the caps is that none of the stores are wanting to sell them locally, not sure if it's a new law or restriction as I remember seeing them before. I found some online relatively cheap but the shipping prices pretty high, which defeats the purpose some I suppose.

I appreciate your input! Just wanted to see what other people thought and if there where any potential risks I might be overlooking.

Thanks!

There is probably nothing wrong with using the tissue.
I always just take a small pinch of the osmocote and push into the substrate with an index finger.
I also bought powdered supplements form an only agricultural supply for iron, and potassium and Epsom salts for magnesium To make those for liquid dosing I just put a couple tablespoons in a bottle add water and shake well.
Saves a lot of money from having to buy liquid ferts.
I haven’t bought any ferts in probably two years.
