I am building a RUGF (Reverse under gravel filter) Which i would mainly be using to keep debris our of my sand.

I built this for my 55 gallon, but have yet to drill any holes/slits or anything.

So my question for this is.
Its 1/2 inch pvc.
What should i do for the slits/holes and how big should i make them?
How many of them should i make? Like one every inch?

Also, where should i put them? at the bottom? at the top? side?

Lastly, What kind of GPH will i need to make this efficient?

I want it to have a nice amount of flow, but not so much that its going to blow my fish around the tank.

Bump - Cmon cant somebody answer any of these questions?

A lot of ppl can, and all ready have, try this forums search function it is fabulous.

I posted all the forumlas here, page 11 it is for 3/4 ", so redo the math and it will tell you how many holes and what size, if you need more help, ask. And give me some time to get back to ya. I have to work sometimes.

Yeah could you post a link to it? I cant manage to find it anywhere i look.

Drill lots of small holes and realistically it should be fine. start with one every 1-2" and hook it up to your pump. If the water squirts out of the holes under pressure, drill more holes till it's a nice lazy flow. Oh, and drill the holes facing the bottom of your tank, to give the flow room to spread out through your sand. Otherwise you'll just have craters in your sand above all the holes from the flow, and when you shut the pump off, sand will tend to get into your pipes.

As for sizing your pump - size it to turn the tank water over between 3 and 10x per hour. You won't be able to blow your fish around with a system like this - the flow is just way too spread out. In fact it's not a bad idea to add a bubble strip or a small powerhead to create some current in the tank with a system like this, otherwise the heavier debris will settle on the sand, even against the RUGF flow.
