So as I am washing playsand for my 135 approx 130lbs, I get to about the last bucket that needs to be done and think "wow there has to be an easier way to do this". So I thought of this idea.

Keep in mind that I didnt accually make this just thougth about it, it was too late to make it cuz I was already done washing my sand, but I thought it could save some of my fellow mfk'ers sore backs and some time. It prolly needs some tweaking here and there but heres the basic design.

Ok so here wat you need

2- 5 or 3 gallon buckets depending on what you have laying around
1- piece of screendoor screening
1- 5/8 inch bulkhead
Power drill
medium-large drillbit
5/8 holecutter bit.

So heres what you do....

take one of the buckets and using your reg. drill bit dirll a bunch of holes in the bottem of it.

Take the other bucket and drill the 5/8in hole using the holecutter, insert bulkhead fitting.

Take the door screen and cut out a circular piece to cover up the bottem of the bucket with the holes. put the screen in the bottem of the bucket.

put the bucket with the holes inside the other bucket and attach hose to the bulkhead.

Add sand to the top bucket and turn on hose

Sit back and sip coke/beer.

Basically the water goes up through the holes, through the sand and overflows out the top. And after a while you have clean sand. the screen prevents sand from going back through the hole.

Suggestions/comments welcome

You just gave me a headache, I'm going to have to re-read this tomorrow, but I think I get the idea.

in theory it would work, but(some always has to add that) it would take a little longer than the tried and true way. and if i was to suggest anything, it would be to have the water running thru the sand the opposite way, the low water pressure for your idea may leave some things in the sand. anyway i better just stop there, i could keep going for hours once i get going hahaha

they did something just like this on mythbusters when they were trying to make quicksand

Sounds like a good idea. I'm shortly going to be getting sand for my new 180 litre tank and anything to save time is a good idea.

Out of interest, how do other people clean their sand before putting it in the tank?

when i cleaned mine i just put it into a big bucket then ran water into the bucket and left it running as i mixed around the sand. then all the stuff that floated to the top just over flowed over the edge.

Show off...just because your way is easier and faster (in that you are sipping you beverage of choice while the fancy sand filter/cleaner is still being set up) doesn't mean it's better...oh, wait uhm, I guess it does?

Hvae you tried washing more sand using the screen yet?
