It's getting that time that i need to get my baby's into a new home within the yr. I have been doing a lot of research but still get very confused on some of the aspects of building a tank. I am going between the small pool idea with rubbermaid tub for sump. And the plywood. The pool seems the best and most cost affective due to the fact my husdband is not the best at carpentry. So if you diy guys can help me with the pros and cons of both so i can make my decision and get started. Oh the sharks are 2 brown bamded bamboo's and 2 coral cats. right now they are housed in a 180. the largest of the four is at 19 inch and growing fast. A couple of my other lg fish will prob go in there as well....By the way if anyone is unaware this is a saltwater tank build. I knew i was going to have to build a tank when i got them. I am prepared to do so i just need help from you guys to make final decisions.

Rubbermaid tub like a 300 gal...will not hold u off for very long unless you can somehow get the 800gal they make in ur house/garage. I currently have a 1700gal 12' diamater intex pool running and i think this may be ur best bet. I also run a 45mil epdm pondliner overtop of the intex liner for extra security. For under $400 pool with liner is a very good investment. They come in 8'10'12' and 15' diamaters. Im sure you know bamboos get well over 40" so the 300 rubbermaid is a waste of time imo. As for a skimmer large enough to handle that pool most people prefer ets brand. I prefer euroreef skimmers over anything but you can always modify anything you find used. The skimmer will def. Be the most expensive part of ur new setup.

Thank you. I have thought about using a pool but i am worried about all the water in the basement. Does that creat excess water in your home???

Surprisingly no, i do not have any issues with humidity or moisture. I do not heat the pool, i imagine you would not either as sharks like colder water. I do have plastic up on my basement ceiling and i also run a dehumidifier. Only times ive had trouble with moisture and open top tanks/ponds was in a garage and on my sun porch where the tempature is very extreme between the two during the winter. Your basement being heated and a dehumidifier should even out any issues.

That is awsome. I would love to give them a pool vs a rubbermaid. But a question?? I have a 12 inch vlamingi tang who as an adult gets 2ft. Would she be ok in the pool without a heater or should i keep her in the 180 but she would eventually get cramped. I know in the wild as adults they live more in open water so does that mean they will tolerate the cooler water of a basement pond?

I think the tang will be fine...I run submersible pumps in my pool so it helps to keep the water warm. Temp stays around 72-74 degrees year round and i do not run any kind of heaters. I have alot of salt tanks aswell that run with no heat for puffers, groupers, yellow tangs and snowflake moreys. There is also a 16" SS turtle in my pool tho so there is a heat lamp hanging from the ceiling about 2 ft. from the waters surface. I'd imagine you could do the same if the water is staying below 70degrees. You get light and some heat so it ends ups working out pretty good.

I would think that saltwater fish can handle more cooler temps especially bigger species who tend to go into deeper water.
