Hi
Does somebody have experience doing a solar water heater for an outdoor pond (1000gal) ?

I've constructed many using PVC & similar methods to this http://www.bettablocks.com/solarheater.html but in a single layer or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI04Hs2n0kQ&feature=related . If the water in the pipes gets to 140*F it can damage the joints and start leaks (with PVC).

" What about immerge the "bucket of water being heated " in the main tank with the fish?"

In your case, the "bucket" is the pond.

If you literally put the "bucket" in the pond, it would be indirect heating (closed circuit, less efficient) and would be better accomplished with a coil immersed in the pond or sump (better) instead of the "bucket".

Size of the collector depends on the amount of sun it gets and it's efficiency.

I liked this one too http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=11932

Keep us posted on your findings,

Dr Joe
