DIY sponge filter foam?

Is there any type of foams that are ideal for use as a sponge filters or any I should avoid using?

I want to build a few sponge filters to keep I case of an emergency or additional filtration. I know I could buy them but the only store in my area that selling them the price is double what they cost online. I figured it will cost around the same to build them as buying them online. Besides its a cool project and something that could save fishes.

Thanks. Those are perfect you can buy a big block and build 5 or more filters out of it.
