I wanted to make a DIY sponge filter and was wondering whether or not I have to have the tube in the sponge. According to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bVelE9Cu5c&feature=channel_video_title I'm not sure if it actually works htough, it just looks like air bubbles going through the sponge.

The lift tube that the bubbles travel up is what is pulling most of the water through the sponge.
