So I had one of those 5-15 gallon hob filters from walmart and decided to do something with it. So I took an extra aquaclear sponge, ran an air stone to the bottom of the filter then shoved the sponge into the filter. Will this work as a good sponge filter (if not explain), its being run on my 55 with a lone Jag cichlid. It seems like a good idea and a cheap filter, no more than an average sponge filter, only about $15 (10 for the filter, 5 for the sponge) without the air pump

I would think that it would be more effective in the tank in addition to also running the HOB..

I'll have to do a little more research
any other thoughts?

Thats pretty good, I need to do that anyways, I just switched to a fine sand myself. Also, I realize this is more like a wet dry than a sponge filter, but after some research it seems beneficial to have the oxygen going through your biomedia to add aerobic beneficial bacteria.
