I'm wanting to start diy-ing my own sponges since it seems easy enough and I can get more filter for less money. Now, I'm looking at this sponge for this.

I'm looking at the 2' x 1' x 2" green one to be exact. Now, all I would have to do is cut out a hole, put a piece of pvc pipe into it, stick an air stone down the tube and that's it? Will 2" be of sufficient width to work?

For a sponge filter you need a sponge with water flowing through it. That is it. The tube (PVC pipe if you like) with the air stone provides the water flow and aerates the water some at the same time. 2" thick foam should be fine. You could double over the foam for 4" thick if you wanted to.

Thank you, I was over thinking it and you confirmed what I initially thought.

Just HMF. Go to swisstropics and checkout how they do them. Their sponge isn’t cheap it will last and their jetlifters are the best. Then just use an air pump.
