Hey guys im building a stand for my 125 Gal its 72Lx18Wx22H. Now the stand i plan on building for this, i wanted it to be slightly more thicker in terms of width wise. Instead of having to build the stand's width to 19" adding an extra 1/2" for a bit of allowance between the stand and the back and such. Now instead of the 19" im planning on making the stand to 25" this way i can fit a 180 Gal tank if do ever decided to upgrade. Now my question is, since this tank will have 7" of space from the back and wont exactly be sitting directly where the legs of the stands are would the 3/4" plywood im putting on as the top part in my stand still hold the weight or would there be a lot of stress within the 3/4" plywood ill have it sit on directly?

Not sure if i explained that a bit too confusing, but ill elaborate more if you guys aren't too sure what i meant.

Also some people mentioned that large containers are not good to use as a sump, due to cracking only after weeks in use. Has anyone ever had this problem. Any pros/cons of using long large containers as sumps?

You could make the stand 25" and then where the 125 would sit, put extra support there (2X4's) and you would be find. The force of the tank is down and centered on the edges mostly the end edges of the tank. I would just put 2X4's where that 125 is going to be and you will be fine. You could even make it in a way that you could take out the boards once you get the 180 or such. Just a thought.

I personally wouldn't trust plywood to support ANY weight. I would frame the stand with whatever you decide to use that is known to support heavy loads. Let's say 2x4's for example. Then use the plywood as a cosmetic skin. You are going to be supporting 1000 lbs just in water weight, Not counting the glass, substrate, decor, etc.

Paulbearer the thing is im not really too sure how i would support in a way, because i want the inside to also be big enough for a sump/w/d. The tank will be sitting at both end supports and the front but not at the back so im worried it may not hold.

Alan Russell so your're suggesting to build the stand pretty much to hold my 125 Gal. And go by what the measurements of the 125 Gal which is what im planning on doing and the 180 is just planning ahead thing so ya.

Heres a link to the two stands i made for my 125 and 135. I put a wet/dry in the 135 and it fit perfectly. What you should do is to place the 2x4s where the 125 is going to be sitting on but only use screws, that way you can take them off when you upgrade.
