The stand will be for a 36"-12"-17" 38g and i want it to be around 30" tall. but i hav no clue how to go about building. What kind of wood should i use? and any advice on how to build it would be great. also id like to hav doors on it and hav a 36"-10"-17" sump under it. any help is appreciated

Your sump has to be smaller than the stand so think 34 x 10 or less...

Your tank is 36 on the outside, if you use (lets assume pine) 2x4s you will be removing 4 inches in length, so 32 or less.

As you can see here, you can use 1 inch thick wood as well, & keep the space at 34 inches

What I did above was make V's for the corners & add a board on top, frame the top & bottom, then skin the whole thing with a "nicer" wood.

Then on the one below, I made the sides solid & framed the top, and added shelves, braces, and a back for lateral support

Hope this helps, there are many other stands throughout the DIY forums, search stand for many ideas as well.

Rexfish, those stands are beautiful! what kind of wood did u use? would i be able to modify that design to fit a sump of equal length to the main tank? i think ill follow ur design, looks nice and simple. also wats a rough estimate of how much itll cost to make? thx

Here's mine so far. It will give you an example of the frame work. it's very sturdy. I'll finish the rest as soon as I seal the tank and make sure it holds water. :D

Thanks, I used 3/4 in oak plywood. Yes you could modify it, just make sure that you support the top so it doesnt bend on you. One sheet of oak ply will cost you about $45 depending on your location. You might only need one if you do it right. Then theres the moldings, hinges, screws, glue, ex.

thx rex, ill look into how much a sheet of oak ply will cost me. Are there any other opinions on how i should go about modifying it to fit a 3' sump under it? i was thinking just use 2x4s to support the ends of the stand so the sump could sit in between them and hav a removable side panel to access it. And pharoah, what kind of wood do u use for your stands? and if u dont mind me asking around how much would the wood for one cost? they look great and sturdy.

The way you could fit the sump in there would be to put a 2x4 parallel to the top then support it with 2 2x4s at the end. This would also he done with the front of the stand. Thats the only way i could think of that will hold the tank and fit the sump you want.

so id just follow your design except instead of the plywood support on the sides id use a 2x4 on each corner?
