I just picked up a 60"x18"x24" tank and I am going to build a stand for it out of 2x4s. The porcelain tile in my house is a litte uneven, but no more than a 1/16" high in some areas and a 1/16" low in other areas, but where I am going to put the tank is very level. I am not sure if I should just shim the stand all around or what. Could I put plywood on the bottom of the stand and styrofoam under that to absorb those minor high and lows? Anyone got any ideas?

I plan on building the stand kinda like this-

Sounds like the plan...I have a 60x20 stand footprint on my hearth made of bricks and that's how I leveled mine...about an eighth" or better low on the right side...it's dead even by shimming with foam insulation...

Like I said, the floor is extremely level, just minor highs and lows from the tile (1/16" at most in some places). Do you think I need a sheet of plywood covering the bottom of the stand? Or would it be find just putting the stand on the styrofoam with the framing like in the link I posted in my first post?

Mine is a standard stand with 2x4 legs at the corners and in the middle...the plywood shelf is off the floor like 2-3"
The side, front and rear sheeting is like 1/4'' off the floor as well.
Only thing touching the hearth is the 6 "legs" and that's all I shimmed/padded with foam...

Got any pictures? Maybe I should build something with legs instead.

Mine is just a basic LFS stand with 4 door on the front...the legs are tied together with the plywood floor/shelf that the filters set on...lemme see if I can get a shot of the inside for you...

No big deal. I think I know what you are talking about now, the LFS by me sells something similar I think.

Last time I tried building a wooden stand it didnt work out so well, I think I am stressing it a little too much. I had issues with the top frame part that the tank sits on not being flat and even due to natural variances in the wood.

Anyone think I am just worrying too much? Or do I need to do something to ensure the stand will sit flat against the tile floor like putting styrofoam between the stand and floor? I don't think I have seen anyone do that but I assume it would work.

that will be fine. you could also use carpet or just plain shims. maybe the play foam padding that lock together and just cut it to size. i just shimmed mine with wood shims. my old stand i used pennies. buwahahahha. how ghetto is that? :)
