diy sump confusion

hey guys im a bit confused about how sumps work. could you guys post pics of you complete setups to help give me some ideas and are overflows necessary for a sump. most of my confusion is how the water gets into the sump from the main tank and then back out? thanks for any help you guys can give its greatly appreciated

A little searching will do you a world of good. There are alot of pix here.

Water flows out the overflow to the sump and gets pumped from the sump back to the tank. No more water can flow out of the tank than what is pumped in.

so are overflows necessary? or can a tank with no overflow use a sump

Either you will need to drill the tank or you will need to use an overflow.

or you could have the tsump ovrehead the tank and pump the water into the sump then just let it flow into the tank
