Hello Everyone,
I built a sump for the ease of not having to clean it as much, but it seems im still getting tons of brown muck down there. And it is extremely difficult to clean out when i have a 2in gap from the top of the sump to the bottom of the tank. Ive been trying to use a 1800 gph pump to suck everything out but it seems to fill the 5 gallon extremely fast after i get the siphon started. I have a 700 gph pump coming from the sump to tank. I was thinking maybe there is a way I can drill holes in a hose/pvc down in the sump going into the 700gph pump so that it draws the water in with more force. So that that detritus around the pump gets pumped into the tank rather than in the sump so that I can clean it when I clean it weekly I can get all of the gunk. Any ideas.

The utility pump in pump is facing away from the bioball chamber.
I dont want to burn my 700 gph pump up, though because water damage is going to be terrible if the pump shuts off or clogs.
Thank you everyone who looks and drops there two cents. I am lost

Get a 50 micron filter socks, cut it out and replace the filter pad

hmm does anyone have a visual on what that would look like. Would i have the pvc run straight into the socks? and the water that runs out of the socks go into the sump with the bio balls? or would i put bio balls into the socks?

depends on your load and the micron size. With 50 micron, 2-5 days is a rough guide.

bio balls could work

I don't think bio balls are great at mechanical filtration. Biological yes, but mechanical, no.
