Ok I've been thinking of building a sump either for my 220 or to sell for the extra cash out of stuff I basically had laying around from all my other tanks I once had.

I made the plan and posted it here....

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=310802 .....
To make sure the plan was O.K.

What all I had laying around that I didn't have to pay for (or did a long time ago)...

standard 75 gallon All Glass tank.
3/4" PVC
Egg Crate
Small sheet or plexi for drip plate
Mag12
250 Watt stealth heater (going to replace it with a 400 I just need to find it)
Rock (to hold down eggcrate over growout area)
All bio media (roughly 23 gallons)
Filter floss (not pictured)

What' I needed to buy...

GE1 silicone (4.99)
3 sheets of cut glass (16.05)

this is the empty tank that I started out with. In a former life this was the ultimate Feeder tank that at one time successfully housed over 500 2-3" feeder golds and was filtered by huge sponge filters and a FX5.

The glass pieces that I had cut. If I could change these I would ahve had one cut 1" taller instead of both the same but they will work. A local hardware store cut me these for 16.05 Not bad if you as me. It's better then running out of town for glass

some of the PVC legs I had to cut to hold up drip plates and eggcrate

Ok shot me I got lazy and just wanted to build and not take pics as I went along anymore. But this is basically the end result. the first bio chamber got shrtend by about 2" from the paint drawing I did in my first thread simply to try and get more room in the growout.

the bio chamber holds 22-23.3 gallons of bio. What bio that is in the chamber is the same amount Exactly that was in my sump for my 585 (that's where I got it all from the new owner didn't want the filter so I took it apart and keept the bio.)

The new little chamber will hold bags of chemical media Which I also have plenty of laying around I just need to get the bags. The bags will sit on the egg crate and sit in a spot that is about 5.75"x17.25"x5" and will house two bags one of ammo chips and one of carbon.

The next is the growout area that is about 12"x17.25"x10" It's big enough to hold at least one fish that's 8-10" but not for long periods of time. Something that I have always wanted in a filter so I dont' need a growout tank.

Lastly is the pump and heater house. This area is 6"x17.25"x10" It houses a mag 12 just fine and could fit another one if I wanted to run two pumps.

Now the only things that I need to do is get...
Media bags
Parts to build the filter inlet (will be a 3/4" PVC "thing" lol)
Cut the filter floss to fit the drip plate
Make lids

I'm not sure how I was to do the lids yet but I have an idea.

Comments welcome.

What's the ballpark price on one of these?

What's your plan for mechanical? Filter pad on top of the drip plate?

Looks good!

nice huge sump, but what is the third chamber for? It looks as if there will be only a little bit of flow through it, which will result in a deadspot for debris and stuff, but now that I think about it, maybe that's what you were going for????

I think I'm going to get a small (very small) pump to stick in there I don't want to much water movement in there b/c that will be a growout area.

refugium maybe?

Sure. I think that's what it's called I just call it a growout area. lol

When it's all said and done I think I'll have like bewteen 350-400 in it. Closer to 400 once you add in all the filter media. And yeah I'll have a pad on top of the drip plate. I still have a HUGE roll of floss left over from my 585.

thanks. I hope to test fill it sunday. then I'll let it run for a day of two then I'll toss in a goldfish into the growout area and see what happens. If he lives for a week I decide from there weather or not I want to keep this or sell it.

It's up and running (a test run) no leaks when filled and it's running great on a full 1200GPH.

As long as it has no problems over the weekend it will be up for sale as of sunday.

I'm still not sure what price I'll have to look around and see what other sumps similar are going for.
