I am looking to build a diy sump for my 300gallon tank and have a few questions.

1.) What size pump will be acceptable to filter a 300g?

2.) Is it better to use an existing aquarium, or some other random container?

3.) Are there any basic guides someone can point me toward for help? I have precisely 0 knowledge regarding plumbing. The holes drilled beneath my overflows appear to be about 3" across, which I am told is rather large.

I have always used hobs, canisters, and pothos for filtration. I am really nervous about the transition. Thanks a ton guys.

usually for pump size you want something that does 3x-4x perhour of your tank capacity. in this case you may want something 1000+ gph
