So im doing a sump for my diy tank and am about to try a smaller version of it on the extra baths garden tub. Its a 90 gallon tub. I want top try the rubbermaid type since i have extra tubs and the stackable towers laying around the the garage. I got about 100 scrubbies, and got some scrubby pads. Was wondering if anyone had tried to use say lava rock also in there sump. I have very low ph around here and thought since i dont like the look of it in a tank maybe i could use it in the sump.

As far as i'm concerned, anything that's aquarium safe and has lots of surface area is perfectly good bio media. When I built my sump, I went out and collected small pieces of sandstone from a park and used those. After cleaning and boiling them, of course. Not sure that the lava rock will have any effect on your pH, though.

I have lava rock in my sump and it works fine!.....Another media i heard is nice..more mechanical is fishing line...go to a bait shop and ask for all their old line

Have a look at crushed pumice stone/gravel,comes in chunks 5-10mm and has a huge surface area as it is made up of very fine internal pores in fact it is very similar in makup to seachem pond matrix,Not sure whats available in the states but I can buy 8kg/16lt in the uk for around £30.It is way cheaper than the eheim/seachem stuff yet has a very similar internal structure.
