In the process of rehauling my 500g and in the brief time the tank is down I want to re-do my sump system since the guy who set the tank up for me used way too small a sump. Like a lot of people I have a short stand to consider so I can't just cram a 75g under there.

I was thinking I'd just stick my current wet/dry sump (40g or so) inside a big tub/bin and open the current return area (drill, etc) to incorporate the tub volume into it, then move the return pump into the end of the tub. This would make life easier for me but I wasn't sure if I'm just being lazy or not.

Could this work?

sounds like an inefficient pain in the butt. why not just use the tub? I used a 60G low for mine, only 12" high.
