Ok...I admit it I come from the "Old School" LOL!
I used to use Supreme HOB filters for years and loved the ability to use any media you wanted, as well as the basic operation... (No Bypass, J-tubes, pumping OUT of the filter box)

Has anyone ever toyed around with trying to do a DIY version since these are sadly no longer made?

No those are the "new" type...:(

(although the first link did have a couple of replacement parts listed for the PM series)

The ones I am talking about would remind you of an overflow box except they had a motor driven pump that pumped back into the tank.
They had 2-J or U tubes that siphoned the water into the filter box... the motor driven pump sits on a plate with pedestal with slots that ran the whole length of the filter box on bottom.
You place your filter medium on top of this plate.
They made 3 models I believe... the PME, a mid sized one, and the "King"

Maybe you can make one out of a specimen container, powerhead, and PVC pipes??
I don't know what you could use as media. Maybe AC media???

I just actually found one of those filters 2 yrs. ago here in the SF bay area. There used to be a lfs here in Brisbane that used to sell them. The owners swore by them. I am still on the hunt to find these. Who was the manufacturer of these filters? If anybody has any info on where to find these filters it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.
