When doing a DIY tank, what controls the glass thickness? I'm thinking I want something nice and wide and long (8x3x2) with viewing squares on each end and a viewing panel on one or both of the long sides. Which measurement determines how thick I have to have the glass? Depth creates pressure, but since it would be a panel in the side of a wood/fiberglass tank, it would reduce pressure right?

Same consideration/question for acrylic panes instead as well.

intrestinlgy you could build a tank say 1000 gallons and only use 2mm glass as long as it was only about 2 inchs high. it sure would be a massive tank though!

All depends on height. DEFINATLY go to garf as EH1421 pointed out and go to diy pages. just put in demensions and it tells u thickness and how to build it. 1/4" for 18" and under in height and 3/8" for 2-?' tall... cant remember, dont rely on my estimates, go to GARF.

Even more interestingly, you could "build" a 1000.000.000.000g tank without using glass
at all, as long as it is only 2mm high. And that would be a really massive tank.

And, amazingly, gigantic "tanks" of almost any depth are possible to build without glass as well. All you need to do is to "flatten" out the surface of the Earth. The precipitation will fill it up and make up for the lack of curvature.

And maybe we could drown Benfica in it.

dang! you is a fountain of knowledge!... must learn more counter attack facts for future

garf wont cauclate the thickness of glass past 120 inches my idea was a 120in by 48in by 36in/or24in

My tank isn't done yet but it's been filled a few times and the glass didn't fail. The tank is 36" tall and the glass is 1/2" tempered. The viewing area is only 28" tall.
