hey guys,

i have an opportunity to get 1/4" glass really cheap and i would really like to make a diy tank.

i want to a make a tank with either a 6x4 or 8x4 footprint.

my questions are, is this even possible with 1/4"glass?
if so, whats the max height i could make it?

thank you for your time

I've never done DIY glass, only acrylic, but IMO, 1/4" glass would be way too thin for anything but relatively small 10-30 gallon tanks. You'd have to brace it every foot or so, top and bottom, and the tank would only be able to be 12-16 inches tall. Also, the bottoms of glass tanks are usually made from tempered glass for strength, so you'd need 2 different kinds of glass anyway.

I just built a 6x2x1 tank out of 1/4" float glass. It works great. You dont need to get a tempered bottom. In fact you cant drill a tank that is made of tempered glass, and it is more likely to shatter although it is stronger

alright here you go just checked out the garf websit the max height you can go is 18 inches with 1/4 inch glass of either footprint you have posted here.
check them out here http://garf.org/index.html
its's under diy pages
let us know what you build and post some pics

so the garf site isn't usually wrong about these things correct? thats all i need is 450gallons of water on my floor.

i think i can also get 3/8" from this company, which would probably be alot safer right?

i see that the garf site is what most people use as a guideline to build tanks so i think their info is pretty much on point

gman , do you have any pics of your tank im actually thinking of building a 79"x24"x18"tall glass tank with 1/4" glass.

12mm+ glass would be great. If you want a much bigger tank, are you wanting length over height or what? A 10x3x2.5 Would be superb. 560G.
