Has anyone tried making their own test kits for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
The commercial onces are so expensive.

You can also take a water sample to any lfs or chain to have it tested for free.

To pinch pennies I use a smaller volume of water than the test calls for. For example, when testing nitrates: instead of using 5ml and 10 drops, I use 2ml and 4 drops. Kit lasts twice as long, still gives me the info I need.

i gotta believe that if you did enough of a bulk, the savings would be very considerable. maybe you could even sell your excess as "kits" to local hobbyists if you did it right?

the test kits in vancouver are 40bucks same as the first link... so damn expensive

By the time you order in fresh chemicals and properly mix/store them and their calibrating fluids and add shipping, the test kits are cheaper.

.
That and youll also feel nauscous.

Is there a DIY copper test guide?

Man. If I saw an API freshwater master kit for $20 I'd assume it was hot. I can usually find these at LFS's for $50 and sometimes up to $70.
