Money is tight, but fish are in the tank and I don't have the desire to spend $50+ on a hood for my 55gal. So too keep small children and pesky cats away from my fish I've taken some 1/2" white UHMW(plastic) that we had in the shop and sheared it down to fit the opening. Once I get home I'll have to trim it around my filter but that should be easy enough. Eventually I plan on running some LEDs of some sort for lighting, but for now it's all about protection and should be easily modifiied if I have to add any slots for tubing or wiring etc. This pic is just after the first wipe down, all the brown guck is left over from duct tape and I'm scraping that off now. Comments, questions, link to simple plug-in LED appriciated.
I also probably paint them at some point if the white stands out too much from the black tank trim
